Budgeting for IB retake exams

The price of an IB retake is not just one line item. Students often remember the exam fee and forget the school hosting fee, travel, documents, currency conversion, or the cost of waiting too long. This guide gives you a realistic way to plan before you commit.

1. IB Assessment Fees

The old flat candidate fee was removed from November 2019. Current retake candidates should confirm IB assessment fees through the IB World School that accepts and registers them.

Tip: Ask the accepting coordinator for an itemized quote before final registration. Public price examples are only planning estimates.

2. Subject and Core Component Fees

The final assessment amount can depend on the subjects selected, any relevant core components, currency, session timing, and the school's administration policy. The accepting school is the place to confirm the exact figure.

If a subject has special practical or administrative requirements, ask whether those costs are included in the school's quote.

3. School Administration Fees

This is where costs vary the most. The exam school registering you as a retake candidate will almost certainly charge an administration fee. This covers:

Administration fees typically range from $150 to $800+ depending on the school, location, and how many subjects you register for. Some schools charge a flat fee; others charge per subject.

That is why school fees can change the full retake budget more than students expect.

4. Late Registration Penalties

The IB has strict registration deadlines. If your school submits your registration after the standard deadline but before the late deadline, late fees can apply. After the late deadline, registration may no longer be possible.

Important: The deadline that matters is when the school submits your registration to the IB, not when you contact the school. Build in buffer time, at least 2 to 3 weeks before the IB deadline.

5. IBretake Package and Refund Planning

IBretake shows your package price before checkout. After payment, your retake search becomes active and eligible coordinators in your selected countries and radius are contacted. School names stay private until a school accepts your request.

Refunds open after 5 working days if no school has accepted you yet. If no school accepts within 14 days, the full refund process starts automatically. After a school accepts, the placement is considered successful and refunds are no longer available.

No IA services: IBretake does not arrange new IA, coursework, tutoring, or coursework supervision. If your retake depends on IA or coursework handling, confirm that separately with an IB coordinator.
